IBM Power Virtual Server (PowerVS)

PowerVS

IBM Power Virtual Server, or PowerVS, lets an IBM i shop rent IBM Power server capacity inside IBM's data centers instead of buying a box, and run the same AIX, IBM i and Linux partitions there. IBM describes it as a family of configurable, multitenant, virtual IBM Power servers with access to IBM Cloud services, web, DevOps and IBM Db2, which is how an IBM i partition ends up on the same cloud network as IBM Cloud AI services such as watsonx.ai.

What is IBM Power Virtual Server?

IBM calls it a family of configurable, multitenant, virtual IBM Power servers with access to IBM Cloud services, web, DevOps and IBM Db2. In plain words, you rent slices of real IBM Power machines that IBM keeps in its own data centers. IBM says you can deploy a virtual server, also known as a logical partition or LPAR, in a matter of minutes. An LPAR is one walled-off slice of a Power server with its own operating system.

Think of renting a storage unit instead of building a shed. The unit is real and it is yours while you pay. The building, the roof and the locks are somebody else's job.

  • It runs AIX, which is IBM's Unix for Power, plus IBM i and Linux. That is the same three operating systems as an on-premises Power server.
  • Billing is pay-as-you-use, not a purchase.
  • IBM says the partition can be connected to access a stack of enterprise services from IBM.

Which IBM i versions can run on it?

IBM i releases IBM lists for each PowerVS processor family

Processor familyIBM i versions IBM lists
Power 9IBM i 7.3 or later
Power 10IBM i 7.3 or later
Power 11IBM i 7.4 or later

From IBM's Power Virtual Server operating systems documentation. IBM adds that the IBM i 7.4, 7.5, 7.6 and Cloud Optical Repository (COR) images support Power10 and later systems, so a 7.6 partition needs Power 10 or Power 11 underneath it.

Two dates matter before you plan a move. IBM says IBM i 7.3 on Power Virtual Server ended normal support on 1 October 2023 and is supported with paid service extension only. IBM also says IBM i 7.4 is scheduled to reach the end of normal support on 1 October 2026.

How much of it is there, and where?

PowerVS data centers IT Jungle counted

April 202522 data centers
June 202625 data centers

Both counts are IT Jungle's. The region count did not move. The 22 sites sat across twelve cities in April 2025, and the 25 sat in the same 12 regions by June 2026, because the growth went into cities IBM already served. Sao Paulo went from two data centers to three, and Chennai went from one to three.

How PowerVS reached Power 11

  1. April 2025IT Jungle reports PowerVS running two classes of hardware, Power9 and Power10, across 22 data centers, offering IBM i 7.2 through IBM i 7.5.
  2. July 8, 2025IBM announces Power 11.
  3. July 25, 2025Power 11 reaches general availability and is on IBM Power Virtual Server the same day. TechChannel calls it another first for the line: available in the cloud on Day 1.
  4. June 2026IT Jungle counts 25 PowerVS data centers in the same 12 regions, and estimates over 900 PowerVS customers, up from the roughly 650 IBM reported in October 2024.

The 900 figure is IT Jungle's estimate, built by applying a 30 percent annual growth rate to IBM's own late-2024 number. Treat it as a direction, not a count.

What does this have to do with AI on IBM i?

The honest answer is nearness, not speed. PowerVS does not put a model inside your IBM i partition. It puts your IBM i partition inside IBM Cloud, next door to IBM's AI services, on IBM's own network.

IBM markets exactly that. Its product page offers a demo video showing how you can connect IBM Power Virtual Server and IBM watsonx.ai to start your AI journey, and says you can enhance decision-making and build cognitive applications by integrating AI with IBM watsonx. watsonx.ai is IBM's studio for working with foundation models, the big pre-trained models that generative AI tools are built on.

  • IBM's own one-line description already includes access to IBM Cloud services and IBM Db2, so the AI services next door are not a separate plumbing project.
  • Db2 for i data stays on IBM's network when it travels to an IBM Cloud AI service, instead of crossing the open internet.
  • The chips are the real thing. IBM lists the same Power9, Power10 and Power11 families for PowerVS that it sells for on-premises machines.

IBM's AI wording for PowerVS is product marketing, and it is about connecting a partition to IBM Cloud AI services. It is not a claim that PowerVS runs a large language model inside an IBM i partition for you. IT Jungle's April 2025 PowerVS roundup did not mention AI, watsonx or GPUs at all.

How many ways can you buy it?

Three shapes IBM sells PowerVS in

  1. Off-premises, in IBM's data centersThe usual form. IBM hosts the Power resources in its own data centers with dedicated networking and storage, and you deploy a partition there in minutes.
  2. Private Cloud, in your data centerIBM describes Power Virtual Server Private Cloud as an as-a-service offering that includes a prescriptive set of physical infrastructure, placed in your own data center and managed by IBM. IBM says the internal networks are fenced but offer connectivity options to IBM Cloud infrastructure or on-premises environments.
  3. The Hybrid PackageIBM says the IBM Power Virtual Server Hybrid Package combines select Power11 hardware with IBM Power Virtual Server capacity. One purchase covers a machine you keep and cloud capacity you rent.

The first two come from IBM's Power Virtual Server getting-started documentation. The Hybrid Package wording is from IBM's Power Virtual Server product page.

IBM Power 10

IBM AIX

AIX is IBM's UNIX operating system for IBM Power hardware, the sibling of IBM i on the same servers and the source of the AIX runtime that IBM i ships as PASE for i. On Power 11 it needs AIX 7300-03-01 or higher to run in Power11 compatibility mode, and its AI packages arrive as RPMs from the AIX Toolbox for Open Source Software.

IBM i Technology Refresh (TR)

An IBM i Technology Refresh, or TR, is how IBM adds new function to an IBM i release a shop is already running: it arrives as one Technology Refresh PTF Group, and installing it leaves the release level and the machine code level unchanged. TRs are also where the platform's AI groundwork shows up, because IBM's own IBM i 7.6 TR2 notes from July 2026 document the Code for IBM i editor extensions and the IBM Bob Premium Package for i, and list 17 new IBM i Services an agent can read over SQL.
