IBM Watson

Watson

IBM Watson is IBM's artificial intelligence brand, named after IBM's first chief executive Thomas J. Watson Sr. and known for beating two Jeopardy champions in February 2011 with IBM's DeepQA question-answering software. For an IBM i shop the practical point is that Watson is the older name: IBM's new AI work ships under watsonx, and the one member of that family built for this platform is watsonx Code Assistant for i.

What is IBM Watson?

IBM's own history page says Watson is a question-answering computer system developed by an IBM research team led by principal investigator David Ferrucci, and that it was named after IBM's first CEO, Thomas J. Watson Sr. It ran on IBM's DeepQA software technology, which IBM says it used to generate hypotheses, gather evidence and analyze data. IBM says it took the team five years to perfect the question-answering system.

Think of a very fast research clerk. You ask a question in ordinary English. The clerk does not look up one answer. It guesses many possible answers at once, digs for proof of each one, scores them, then hands you the one it can back up best. That is what question answering means here.

In February 2011 that clerk went on television. IBM says Watson defeated the quiz show's two foremost all-time champions, Brad Rutter and Ken Jennings, using natural language processing to make sense of questions full of puns and wordplay.

Is IBM Watson the same as watsonx?

No. Watson is the older name and watsonx is the current platform. IBM announced watsonx on May 9, 2023 and described it as a new AI and data platform to be released that will enable enterprises to scale and accelerate the impact of the most advanced AI with trusted data. In that same release IBM said watsonx.ai and watsonx.data were expected to be generally available in July 2023, and watsonx.governance later that year.

The old name did not vanish. IBM still sells IBM Watson Speech to Text, which IBM describes as converting speech into text using AI-powered speech recognition and transcription, and IBM Watson Discovery, which IBM sells for intelligent document understanding. Both product pages were live when they were read for this entry. So you will meet both brands on IBM's site on the same day.

One name, three turns

  1. February 2011IBM's Watson DeepQA computer beats Jeopardy champions Brad Rutter and Ken Jennings on television.
  2. June 30, 2022Francisco Partners completes its acquisition of the healthcare data and analytics assets that were part of IBM's Watson Health business, and launches them as a new company called Merative.
  3. May 9, 2023IBM announces watsonx and says watsonx.ai and watsonx.data are expected to be generally available in July 2023.
  4. October 2026IBM is still selling Watson-branded services alongside the watsonx platform, and watsonx Code Assistant for i is the family member aimed at IBM i.

The 2011 line is IBM's wording from its own history page. The 2022 line is from the Francisco Partners press release dated June 30, 2022. The 2023 line is from IBM's newsroom release of May 9, 2023.

Is IBM Watson a large language model?

No, and that mix-up is common. The 2011 Watson was a question-answering system. IBM says it ran on DeepQA software that generated hypotheses, gathered evidence and analyzed data. A large language model, or LLM, is a different kind of program: it is trained on enormous amounts of text and works by predicting language. The models IBM sells under watsonx today, such as the IBM Granite family, are foundation models. The Watson name sits across both eras, which is why one word ends up covering two very different machines.

Watson is a brand, not a specification. When a vendor or an article says a system is powered by Watson, that sentence alone tells you almost nothing. Ask which product and which model. IBM's own pages do name them, either as a specific service such as IBM Watson Speech to Text or as a specific platform piece such as watsonx.ai.

Can an IBM i shop use Watson?

Yes, but not inside the partition. Nothing in the Watson or watsonx family runs on IBM i itself. An IBM i program reaches these services over the network, the same way it would reach any other web service. The one member of the family built for this platform is watsonx Code Assistant for i. IBM calls it a coding assistant that is purpose-built to accelerate the modernization of IBM i applications and says it is capable of providing context aware RPG code explanations. RPG is the language most IBM i business programs are written in, and IBM calls it the most commonly used programming language on IBM i. IBM says the tool is being built on a flagship IBM Granite code model that is fine-tuned for RPG and IBM i.

Three things to check before you buy anything called Watson

  1. Get the real product nameWatson covers a 2011 question-answering machine, several current cloud services, and a whole newer platform. Ask for the exact product name as it appears on an IBM quote, not the brand.
  2. Ask where it runsNone of it runs in your IBM i partition. Find out whether the service sits on IBM Cloud, on another cloud, or on hardware you own, because that answer decides your network work, your data rules and your bill.
  3. Ask which model is behind itFor IBM i code work the answer today is the IBM Granite family. IBM says watsonx Code Assistant for i is being built on a Granite code model fine-tuned for RPG and IBM i. A vendor who cannot name the model cannot tell you what it learned from.

The watsonx Code Assistant for i wording is quoted from IBM's own announcement page for the product.
