IBM watsonx.governance
IBM watsonx.governance is the part of the watsonx platform that watches AI models after they are switched on, checking them for bias and drift and keeping a record an auditor can read. For an IBM i shop it is an oversight layer, not a tool that runs on the box: IBM publishes no IBM i feature for it, and the only documented link is the Db2 for i data connection it shares with watsonx.ai.
What does watsonx.governance do?
It keeps an eye on AI models once they are in use. IBM called it a nutrition label for AI when it announced the product on November 14, 2023. A nutrition label does not cook the food. It tells you what is in it. This does the same job for an AI model: what went in, how it behaves now, and whether it still meets the rules.
- Watches live models for fairness, bias and drift, which means a model slowly going off target
- Scores answers from a large language model against quality measures
- Finds shadow AI, meaning AI tools people started using that nobody wrote down
- Captures compliance evidence as the work happens, so the record exists later
- Maps that work to the EU AI Act, guidance from the National Institute of Standards and Technology, and ISO 42001, a management standard for AI
- Governs models from IBM, from open source communities and from other vendors
IBM groups the product into three ideas on its product page: visibility, meaning a living map of every AI system you run; control, meaning policy and evidence handled automatically; and accountability, meaning you track the result and act on risk signals as they arrive. IBM also lists connections to Azure, AWS and Slack, so the models it watches do not have to be IBM models.
Does it work with IBM i?
Not as an IBM i product. IBM sells no IBM i edition and its product page names no IBM i feature. The one published link is a data connection. IBM ships the on-premises software as a single documentation set covering watsonx.ai and watsonx.governance, and that set includes an IBM Db2 for i connection page under its connectors. So the platform can reach IBM i data the same way watsonx.data can. Watching the model that reads that data is then the same job it would be anywhere else.
The Db2 for i connection page sits in the shared connector section of the watsonx.ai and watsonx.governance 2.4 documentation. It asks for a driver, a hostname or IP address, a port, a location, a username and password, and an SSL certificate if the server wants one. IBM names SPSS Modeler as a tool that can use the connection, and says SPSS Modeler can only import data through it, never export.
What does it cost?
There is a free trial and then two monthly tiers on IBM Cloud. Each tier price covers one instance, one module and one concurrent user, so a real deployment costs more than the starting figure.
watsonx.governance monthly starting prices on IBM Cloud, US dollars
Read from IBM's watsonx.governance pricing page on October 20, 2026. IBM also lists a 14 day free trial, a pay as you go Model Management plan starting at $0.64, and an AWS Marketplace offer starting at $42,000 with 5 AI use cases, 12,000 evaluations and 25 concurrent users. On-premises software is licensed by virtual processor cores. IBM calls all of these prices indicative.
How has it changed since launch?
- Nov 14, 2023IBM announces watsonx.governance and says it will be generally available in early December. The pitch is fairness, bias, drift and new large language model measures, across models from IBM, open source and other providers.
- Dec 15, 2025Version 2.3 of the on-premises software reaches general availability, under IBM announcement letter AD25-1696.
- Jun 17, 2026Version 2.4 reaches general availability, under IBM announcement letter AD26-0507. IBM lists it on a support cycle of two years with a one year critical fix extension.
- Oct 20, 2026IBM's product page describes it as governing any AI anywhere, naming AI agents alongside older machine learning, and adds shadow AI detection.
Dates come from IBM's November 14, 2023 press release and IBM's own software lifecycle pages for watsonx.governance 2.3.x and 2.4.x.
