i5/OS
i5/OS is the name IBM used for the operating system now called IBM i, from 2004 until 2008, across three releases: V5R3, V5R4 and V6R1. All three left IBM program support by September 30, 2015, so a system that still reports i5/OS cannot run any of the AI tooling on this site in a supported way.
What i5/OS is
i5/OS is one name for one long-running operating system. IBM called it OS/400 starting in 1988, i5/OS from 2004 to 2008, and IBM i after that. The software line never broke. So an RPG program, written in the platform's main business programming language, compiled under i5/OS is the same kind of object an AI tool reads on IBM i today. Only the label changed.
Why the name had a 5 in it
IBM rebranded the hardware as eServer i5 in 2004. Those machines used the Power 5 processor, and the 5 in i5/OS pointed straight at it. IBM did not restart the version numbers to 1.0. It kept V5R3 so shops would not read the release as brand new software. IBM described the first one as a different name for the same operating system. When IBM dropped the Power 5 tie in 2008, the name had to go with it.
Which releases were called i5/OS
The four years the name was in use
- Jun 11, 2004i5/OS V5R3 becomes generally available. It is the first release under the new name.
- Feb 14, 2006i5/OS V5R4 becomes generally available. IBM later renumbers it IBM i 5.4.
- Mar 21, 2008i5/OS V6R1 becomes generally available, running on Power 6 machines such as the System i 570 and the BladeCenter JS22 Express.
- Apr 2, 2008IBM merges System i and System p into IBM Power Systems and renames i5/OS to IBM i. V6R1 becomes IBM i 6.1.
IBM's own 6.1 technical overview Redbook, SG24-7713, names the release "IBM i 6.1 (formerly called i5/OS V6R1)".
Can an i5/OS system run today's AI tools?
Not in any supported way. Every i5/OS release is long out of IBM program support. Think of it like a phone that stopped getting updates in 2015. It still turns on and still runs the work it already does, but nothing new installs on it.
IBM's open source documentation says IBM provides community open source packages for IBM i releases in standard support, and it labels the IBM i 7.1 installer experimental and not supported. Every i5/OS release is older than 7.1, so the package manager that nearly every AI tool on IBM i depends on has no supported install there at all.
The three i5/OS releases and how long IBM supported them
| Release | Shipped | IBM support ended | Name today |
|---|---|---|---|
| i5/OS V5R3 | June 11, 2004 | April 30, 2009 | Never renumbered |
| i5/OS V5R4 | February 14, 2006 | September 30, 2013 | IBM i 5.4 |
| i5/OS V6R1 | March 21, 2008 | September 30, 2015 | IBM i 6.1 |

OS/400
OS/400 is the original name of the operating system IBM now calls IBM i. It shipped with the AS/400 on August 26, 1988, became i5/OS in 2004 and IBM i in 2008, so the RPG, COBOL and Db2 for i objects that today's AI tools read sit on one unbroken operating system line.
IBM i
IBM's operating system for Power servers running traditional AS/400-lineage business applications, with Db2 for i built directly into the OS.
AS/400
IBM's original 1988 midrange business computer platform; the term is still used informally to refer to IBM i systems and shops even though IBM has rebranded the hardware and OS multiple times since.
iSeries
iSeries is what IBM called the AS/400 line from 2000 under its eServer brand, and it is still the word many shops use for any IBM i machine. The distinction matters for AI work, because IBM states that IBM i 7.1 is not supported on the iSeries family, so true iSeries-era hardware stops at IBM i 6.1 and cannot run a release current AI tooling expects.
IBM System i
System i is the name IBM used for the AS/400 line from 2006 until April 2008, when the brand became IBM Power Systems and i5/OS became IBM i. For AI work the hardware is the catch, because System i machines use Power 5, Power 5+ or Power 6 processors and IBM states that IBM i 7.3 will not support Power 6 systems, so no System i can run a release IBM's current IBM i documentation covers.
IBM i 7.6
IBM i 7.6 is the current release of IBM's operating system for Power servers, generally available on 18 April 2025 under announcement letter AD25-0031. It is the first release to drop Power 9 and earlier: IBM supports it only on Power 11 processors, or on Power 10 processors at minimum firmware level FW1060, so moving to 7.6 and moving to AI capable hardware are the same purchase.
RPG
Report Program Generator, the primary business application programming language on IBM i and its AS/400 predecessors, still running the majority of production logic in most IBM i shops.
Db2 for i
The relational database management system built into every IBM i operating system, tightly integrated with IBM i rather than a separately installed database product.
