IBM Power Cyber Vault

Power Cyber Vault

IBM Power Cyber Vault is IBM's packaged ransomware defense for IBM Power servers: locked copies of your data kept apart from the running system, plus machine learning down in the storage that watches every write and raises an alert in under a minute. IBM's definition names IBM AIX, IBM i and Linux on Power, but its Power Cyber Vault site documents the AIX build and sends IBM i shops to the PowerHA Safeguarded Copy toolkit instead.

What is IBM Power Cyber Vault?

IBM calls it a cyber resiliency solution designed to address these threats by helping organizations anticipate, withstand, recover from, and adapt to cyber incidents affecting IBM AIX, IBM i, and Linux on Power systems. AIX is IBM's Unix for Power. In plain words it is a bundle, not one product: IBM Power servers, IBM storage, snapshot software, monitoring, automation, and IBM people to put it together.

Think of a bank that photocopies its ledger on a timer and locks each copy in a safe the tellers cannot open. If someone scribbles over today's ledger, yesterday's copy is still clean and still readable.

  • Power 11 servers and IBM FlashSystem or DS8000 storage underneath.
  • IBM Safeguarded Copy, which writes immutable snapshots. Immutable means a copy cannot be changed or deleted once it is written.
  • IBM Copy Services Manager and IBM PowerSC, IBM's security and compliance tool for Power.
  • IBM Storage Insights Pro for monitoring, and Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform so the response is scripted.
  • Setup and design services from IBM Technology Expert Labs.

Where is the AI in it?

Not in your IBM i partition. It is in the drives. IBM says IBM FlashSystem uses machine learning models to detect anomalies like ransomware in less than a minute. The model reads statistics from the FlashCore Module, the smart flash drive IBM builds itself, so the work never lands on the server processor running your jobs.

IBM describes it as AI-powered threat detection built directly into FlashCore Module technology, continuously analyzing drive-level telemetry and watching changes in data behavior every two seconds. Ransomware encrypts files, and encrypted data looks different from ordinary business data when you measure it. The model is trained to notice that change.

Two numbers IBM gives, both measured in seconds

How often the drive telemetry is readevery 2 seconds
How fast IBM claims an alert appearsunder 60 seconds

The two seconds is the sampling rate. The 60 seconds is the detection claim. They measure different things, which is why IBM can watch that often and still quote a minute.

Read IBM's footnotes before you quote the minute. IBM's Power 11 announcement says the guarantee covers only displaying an alert in under one minute, and that remediation is drive replacement up to the cost of the covered product. IBM's FlashSystem page says the result came from internal experimentation by IBM Research on a FlashSystem 5200 with FlashCore Module 4.1 firmware, software 8.6.3, and a Linux XFS file system. That test bed is not an IBM i workload. An alert is also not a fix. Somebody still has to act on it.

Can an IBM i shop use it?

What IBM's Power Cyber Vault site says about each operating system

Operating systemWhat IBM says today
IBM AIXThe documented build. IBM says the site is strictly focused on describing how IBM Cyber Vault is implemented for providing cyber resiliency for AIX virtual machines.
IBM iNamed in the definition, documented somewhere else. IBM says that for information on the IBM i implementation, see PowerHA Safeguarded Copy for IBM i.
Linux on PowerNot there yet. IBM says integrating Linux into the IBM Power Cyber Vault solution is currently in assessment.

Quoted from IBM's IBM Power Cyber Vault support page, read on 12 October 2026.

So the answer is yes, with a detour. The storage side is the same hardware and the same machine learning. The IBM i side is wired up through the Safeguarded Copy Toolkit in PowerHA Tools for IBM i, which gives IBM i commands and application programming interfaces to make safeguarded copies and bring them back on a recovery partition where the data can be checked before you trust it.

What does it promise, step by step?

The five stages IBM names

  1. IdentifyDecide which data matters and where it actually lives.
  2. ProtectSafeguarded Copy writes immutable snapshots on a schedule you set, kept where the running system cannot reach them.
  3. DetectThe FlashSystem machine learning models watch for ransomware-like changes in how data is being written.
  4. RespondRed Hat Ansible Automation Platform runs the prepared playbook, so the reaction is scripted rather than improvised in the middle of the night.
  5. RecoverA clean snapshot is brought back on a recovery partition, validated, and used to restart the business.

The five stage names, Identify, Protect, Detect, Respond and Recover, are IBM's, from an IBM community blog post dated July 8, 2025. The one-line descriptions here summarize the components IBM lists for each one.

How did it get here?

Safeguarded Copy on IBM i, then Power Cyber Vault

  1. January 2024IBM adds FlashSystems Safeguarded Copy without Copy Services Manager to the Safeguarded Copy Toolkit in PowerHA Tools for IBM i.
  2. February 2025IBM adds DS8000 Global Mirror for Safeguarded Copy only to the same IBM i toolkit.
  3. July 8, 2025IBM announces Power 11 and lists less than one minute ransomware threat detection with IBM Power Cyber Vault as a headline claim.
  4. July 25, 2025Power 11 reaches general availability.
  5. September 2026IBM publishes a Think article explaining the detection as AI-powered threat detection built into FlashCore Module technology, reading drive-level telemetry every two seconds.

The two toolkit dates come from IBM's PowerHA Tools for IBM i support page. The Power 11 dates come from IBM's newsroom release of July 8, 2025.
