IBM watsonx.ai
IBM's studio for building, tuning, and deploying foundation models and generative AI applications, and the underlying AI layer other watsonx products are built on.
watsonx.ai is the AI studio inside IBM's watsonx platform: the place where foundation models get experimented with, tuned, and deployed. It is not IBM i-specific on its own, but it matters to an IBM i shop because it is the underlying foundation-model layer that other watsonx-branded products are built on top of. IBM Bob, IBM's GA AI coding agent for IBM i, is a separate product outside the watsonx brand and does not depend on watsonx.ai.
What it actually does
Prompt Lab
An interface for experimenting with prompts against IBM Granite and select third-party foundation models, without writing application code first.
Tuning and deployment
Tools for adapting a foundation model to a specific task or domain, then deploying it as an accessible endpoint.
Retrieval-augmented generation
Patterns for grounding a foundation model's responses in an organization's own documents or data rather than relying on the model's training data alone.
Where IBM i fits in
watsonx.ai itself runs as a cloud service; it does not run natively inside IBM i. An IBM i shop's most direct option for watsonx.ai today is custom integration work connecting Db2 for i data to a watsonx.ai-based RAG application. IBM Bob, IBM's AI coding agent for IBM i, is a separate downloadable product and does not run on watsonx.ai.
watsonx.ai is a general enterprise AI platform, not an IBM i product. Evaluate it as a longer-term custom-integration project against Db2 for i data, rather than expecting an out-of-the-box IBM i connector. For AI-assisted RPG coding on IBM i, see IBM Bob instead.
Related
IBM Bob (Project Bob)
IBM's generally available AI coding agent for IBM i. Bob 2.0 and the Bob Premium Package for i shipped June 24, 2026, adding a Db2 for i Database Mode, about 30 IBM i tools, and direct work on source where it lives. Reported pricing from $20 to $240 per month.
IBM watsonx Code Assistant for i
IBM's November 2025 preview announcement of an IBM i-specific, RPG-focused AI code assistant. This preview track was superseded by IBM Bob, which reached general availability in March 2026.
IBM watsonx Orchestrate
IBM's AI agent and workflow platform, and the first watsonx product with an official link to IBM's IBM i coding agent. The August 2026 release added a Build with Bob preview that launches IBM Bob to generate agents and tools from natural language. Still no IBM i or Db2 for i connector in the box.
IBM watsonx Assistant
IBM's general-purpose conversational AI platform for building chatbots and virtual assistants. Not IBM i-specific, but relevant for shops building conversational front ends over IBM i or Db2 for i data.
Frequently Asked
What is the difference between watsonx.ai and IBM Bob?
watsonx.ai is IBM's general-purpose foundation-model studio, for building, tuning, governing and deploying AI models; version 2.4 shipped in June 2026 with nothing in it aimed at IBM i. IBM Bob is a separate, IBM i-specific product outside the watsonx brand: a downloadable AI coding agent, built as a VS Code fork, tuned for RPG, COBOL, CL, DDS and SQL, and paired with the Bob Premium Package for i that works directly against QSYS, the IFS and Db2 for i. Use Bob for RPG and COBOL work. Use watsonx.ai if you are building a custom AI application from scratch, and budget for the integration, because it has no Db2 for i connector. The two brands touch in exactly one place today: since August 2026, watsonx Orchestrate can launch Bob to build agents, listed by IBM as a preview.
